Executive Order 13514
|
Executive Order (E.O.) 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance, was signed October 5, 2009. The executive order directs Federal agencies to set greenhouse gas emission reduction standards for 2020 within 90 days of its signature.
Federal agencies will also act to accomplish the following:
- Increase their energy efficiency;
- Measure, report, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in direct and indirect activities;
- Reduce petroleum consumption by agency fleets;
- Conserve water through efficiency, reuse, and storm water management;
- Eliminate waste,recycle, and prevent pollution;
- Design, construct, and maintain high performance, sustainable buildings in sustainable locations;
- Support sustainable communitiesand strengthen the communities where federal facilities are located; and
- Use their purchasing power to promote environmentally-responsible products and technologies; and
- Inform federal employees and involve them in achievement of the goals.
The order requires Federal agencies to meet specific energy, water, and waste reduction targets, including the following:
- Reduce petroleum use in fleet vehicles by 30% by 2020;
- Beginning in 2020, design all new federal buidings to reach net-zero energy use by 2030.
- Improve water efficiency by 26% by 2020;
- Minimize federal buildings' impact on storm water runoff;
- Recycle or divert 50% of waste by 2015; and
- Meet sustainability requirements in 95% of all applicable contracts.
