ORNL Carpoolers Save Money and Fuel; Reduce GHG
Oak Ridge National Laboratory participants in Knoxville's Smart Trips program saved $13,644 in averted commuting costs during the period between March 1 and May 31 and eliminated 2,513 gallons of fuel use. Trip elimination due to carpooling, vanpooling, bicycling, and compressed work week arrangements eliminated 49,487 pounds of greenhouse gases. Smart Trips requires participants to log their actual trips by mode. The reduction in vehicle miles traveled is used to develop the fuel and GHG savings. During the three-month period, 2,745 entries were logged by a total of 72 staff. Over half of the entrees were by carpoolers. Find out more about the Smart Trips program.
