 ‭(Hidden)‬ Earth Day Celebration

 

ORNL CELEBRATES EARTH DAY: April 23, 2013, from 11 AM to 1 PM

Get ready for the 2013 ORNL Earth Day Celebration, sponsored by the Sustainable Campus Initiative! This year’s program kicks off at 11 AM in front of building 5200 with a big welcome and presentation of awards by Facilities and Operations Director Jimmy Stone and Oak Ridge Site Office Manager Johnny Moore. Highlights of this year’s celebration include the following.

· Registration, vendor displays and exhibits begin at 11:00 AM. Early arrivals will be asked to wait until 11:00 to register.

· Science Showcases: Demonstrations of “green” technologies developed by ORNL.

· Green Vendors Fair: Local companies displaying a variety of energy saving or environment friendly products (35 companies, and counting).

· Car Show: More than 15 alternative fuel vehicles on display.

· Nature Photography Exhibit: Our own ORNL photographers exhibiting photographs depicting the beauty of nature; new to the ORNL Earth Day Celebration and already a big hit (Building 5700, Court of Flags).

· Tours of the Biomass Steam Plant (BSP) Meet at the 4500N/5600 Crosswalk: BSP is part of ORNL’s sustainability roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use. Two tours are scheduled (Tuesday, April 23, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and Wednesday, April 24, from 11 AM to 12 noon). To reserve a spot, email your name, badge number, and date preference to Tacie Hall.

· “Green Mile” Bike Rides: Get out in the fresh air and get some exercise. Meet on the quad outside the double doors at 5700 at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 24, and participate in either the long bike route out to K25 or stay on campus for a short ride. Either way you’ll have fun!

· More details as they become available will be posted on the Sustainable Campus Initiative website under Earth Day 2013 and on ORNL Today.

Transportation from Commerce Park, HFIR, and SNS to the main campus area will be available in ORNL’s new diesel hybrid buses. (Staff located at NTRC may consider using the pickup location at Commerce Park.). The schedule follows:

SHUTTLE ONE (36-passenger bus) at SNS:
Start at SNS flagpole at 10:30 AM and will run 45 minute intervals back and forth to 4500N/5600 Crosswalk.
Depart SNS Flagpole: 10:30 AM, 11:15 AM, 12:00 PM
Departures from 4500N/5600 Crosswalk to SNS are: 11:30 AM, 12:15 PM, 1:00 PM

SHUTTLE TWO (36-passenger bus) at 1055/1060 Commerce Park:
Start at 1055/1060 Commerce Park at 10:30 AM and will run 45 minute intervals back and forth to 4500N/5600 Crosswalk.
Depart 1055/1060 Commerce Park: 10:30 AM, 11:15 AM, 12:00 PM
Departures from 4500N/5600 Crosswalk to 1055/1060 Commerce Park are: 11:30 AM, 12:15 PM, 1:00 PM

SHUTTLE THREE (34-passenger bus) at Building 1505 and HFIR:
Start at Building 1505 at 10:30 AM and will run in one-hour intervals back and forth to 4500N/5600 Crosswalk.
Depart Building 1505 area at 10:30 AM and 11:30 AM
Depart HFIR area at 10:45 AM and 11:45 AM
Departures from 4500N/5600 Crosswalk to Building 1505 and HFIR are: 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM

NOTE*** There will be signs on the bus to inform passengers of destinations on their route!!

Transportation needs after 1:30 PM departures can call the ORNL TAXI service at 680-2303 or 680-9800.

Celebrate Earth Day in style 

T-Shirts are available for pick up starting
Wednesday, April 10

You can pick up your t-shirt from Kim Drew in building 1505, Room 104A from 11 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Call Kim at 574-5845 and make sure she is in the office before stopping by.

There will be a limited supply of T-Shirts available to purchase on Earth Day.

Five "Lunch and Learn" sessions covered topics from efficient transportation  (Monday) to sustainable renovation (Friday) with a lot of nature (bees, bears, trees, plants, etc.) in between. Calling all nature photographers: Earth Day exhibit

New this year: As a new venue for Earth Day, ORNL staff members are encouraged to exhibit photographs depicting the beauty of nature (wildlife, mountains, rivers) at this year's Earth Day Fair. Reserve a 4X4 display board to show off your photographs on April 23 in Bldg 5600, Court of Flags. The boards will be set up in a "V" configuration on tables. Each display board is made up of 4 sections; each section has a 4X4 layout area; you may reserve from one to four sections (one whole board). If you would like to participate, contact Tacie Hall at 574-7852 or
halltr@ornl.gov to reserve your board.

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Biomass Tours

NEW:  Tours of the Biomass Steam Plant are being offered this year.  (ALL SPACES HAVE BEEN RESERVED)

Biomass Steam Plant (BSP) Meet at the 4500N/5600 Crosswalk: BSP is part of ORNL’s sustainability roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use. Two tours are scheduled (Tuesday, April 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Wednesday, April 24, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon). All spaces have been reserved.

BUS TOUR OF STEAM PLANT (36-passenger bus #483) Will pick-up passengers at the 4500N/5600 Crosswalk by 11:25 a.m. and transport to steam plant for tour at 11:30 a.m.  When tour is complete, transport passengers back to the 4500N/5600 Crosswalk.
