Restoring & Protecting the Environment

Restoring and Protecting the Environment

ORNL staff members have been involved in local, national, and international environmental research for more than 60 years. ORNL scientists explore sustainability by conducting research, developing technology, and performing analyses to understand and assess responses of environmental systems at the environment-human interface and also the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies. Studies seek to understand how natural and anthropogenic factors (e.g., global and regional change, environmental stress, energy production and use) interact to influence environmental systems and society.

Much more information about the environmental research conducted at ORNL can be found on the web sites for the following ORNL organizations:

Biological and Environmental Sciences Directorate
Scientists and engineers in the Biological and Environmental Sciences Directorate at the ORNL perform research that leads to new knowledge and technologies in areas of critical importance to the nation.

Environmental Sciences Division
The Environmental Sciences Division is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievement in environmental research. Its vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will strengthen the nation's leadership in creating solutions to help sustain the Earth’s natural resources.

Bioenergy Science Center
The Bioenergy Science Center is a partnership that’s connecting the world’s leading scientific minds and resources to find biofuel solutions to our energy needs. Their goal is to help develop viable, plentiful, and clean alternative biofuel sources to meet our country's growing energy needs while protecting the environment. Biofuel can be produced from any carbon source that can be replenished rapidly, such as plants. One example is to turn common switchgrass or soybeans into fuel that runs your car. Their web site shows some of the other exciting projects they’re working on and how you can be part of the solution.

Center for Bioenergy Sustainability
The Center for Bioenergy Sustainability, a recent initiative of ORNL, is in the development stage. More information about it will be available soon.
